Sofia har opprinnelse i det greske ordet σοφία som betyr «visdom».

Sofia eller Sofie har vært et populært navn i hele Europa. Navnet ble også benyttet for å representere personifiseringen av visdom og er også navnet på en tidlig kristen martyr, Sofia fra Milano.

Sofie er kjent brukt i Danmark fra 1100-tallet og i Norge fra 1600-tallet.

Sophia er kjent brukt i Sverige første gang i 1380. Sofia var et svært vanlig navn i Sverige på midten av 1800-tallet.[1]

Navnet Sofia var vanlig i Norge fra 2000-årene og hadde en popularitetstopp med 1 % i 2025.[2][3]
