The Beatles' versjon[rediger | rediger kilde]
Det var vanlig praksis at Ringo Starr skulle ha et vokal-bidrag på hvert album som The Beatles ga ut (unntakene ble A Hard Day's Night og Let It Be). Starr foreslo «Act Naturally» som sitt vokal-bidrag til Help! og de andre samtykket.[1]
The Beatles' versjon «Act Naturally» ble først utgitt 6. august 1965 på gruppens femte britiske album Help!. I USA fungerte den først som b-side til singlen Yesterday (utgitt 13. september 1965) og 20. juni 1966 på albumet Yesterday and Today.[2]
Innspilling[rediger | rediger kilde]
De spilte inn tretten tagninger 17. juni 1965 i Abbey Road Studios hvor George Harrison spilte både akustisk gitar og sologitar.[3][4] En firesporsteip ble brukt til innspilling. trommer, bass og akustisk gitar, ble innspilt på spor 1, Harrisons sologitar på spor 2, Starrs vokal på spor 3 og McCartneys harmonivokal samt noe perkusjon på spor 4.[5] I dette tilfelle besto perkusjon av at Starr slo trommestikkene mot hverandre. Sologitarist George Harrison benyttet drop D tuning. Det innebar at han stemte ned sin dypeste E-streng ned til D.
Forskjellen på Owens original og The Beatles' coverversjon er at sistnevnte høres mer tragikomisk ut med Starr på vokal enn Owens.[6]
The Beatles fremførte «Act Naturally» på Ed Sullivan Show som ble tatt opp 14. august 1965 (og kringkastet 12. september 1965).[7] Videre ble sangen med på repertoaret da de la ut på sin USA-turne i august 1965 (det vil si at noen ganger ble den byttet ut med «I Wanna Be Your Man»). Man kan også se The Beatles fremføre den i filmdokumentaren The Beatles at the Shea Stadium. Men studioversjonen ble lagt over original-lyden fra konserten siden den ikke var tilfredsstillende.[8]
