Little Bighorn er et fjellområde hvor et av de største slagene mellom indianere og de hvite foregikk, og er det største slaget under indianerkrigene der indianerne vant. Slaget var en del av Black Hills-krigen, som varte fra 1876 til 1877.

I selve slaget møttes hundrevis av sioux- og cheyenne-indianerne det amerikanske 7. kavaleriregiment under ledelse av oberstløytnant George Armstrong Custer. Det amerikanske kavaleriet var sendt ut av den amerikanske stat for å stoppe gruppen av sioux- og cheyenne-indianerne, som ble ledet av blant andre Sitting Bull og Crazy Horse.

Custer under slaget ved Little Bighorn

USAs soldater hadde ikke ventet at indianerne hadde samlet så mange krigere som de hadde, og gjorde mange feil da de skulle disponere og plassere troppene sine. Custer beordret blant annet at troppen skulle deles i to, noe som skulle vise seg å bli fatalt for gruppen under hans ledelse. De ble drevet opp på en høyde der til slutt alle som en ble drept av indianerne, som angrep fra alle kanter.

Custer skal ha vært blant de siste fem til ti soldatene som døde.

Selv om indianerne vant dette slaget, skulle nettopp dette få store konsekvenser for dem selv. Seieren førte til at «Den amerikanske staten» ble sterkt provosert og sendte inn større styrker for å stoppe det som ble oppfattet som et indiansk overtak.

Frykten som ble vakt, med store overskrifter i avisene, skapte en ny bølge indianerhat blant de hvite, med mord og massakrer i kjølvannet. Indianerne som hadde slåss ved Little Bighorn, inkludert deres leder Sitting Bull, var stadig på flukt.

Mens Sitting Bull og hans stamme flyktet til Canada, overgav de andre seg på grunn av sult og sykdom. Sitting Bull vendte noen år tilbake til USA og overgav seg til myndighetene. Indianerhøvdingen, som hadde vært en av de mest respekterte og største indianerlederne, ble senere med på Buffalo Bills omreisende sirkus i Amerika for å la seg vise fram.

Amerikanske historieskrivere har hatt en tendens til å kalle slaget for en «massakre», mens det som skjedde ved Wounded Knee kalles et «slag». Wounded Knee var imidlertid en massakre mot ubevæpnede menn, kvinner, barn og gamle, mens begge parter i Little Bighorn var bevæpnet.
