Cathaoirleach er president for Seanad Éireann, som er overhuset til Irlands lovgivende forsamling, Oireachtas.

Cathaoirleach leder møtene. Vedkommende er også ex officio medlem av Statsrådet (irsk: an Chomhairle Stái) og Presidentkommisjonen (Coimisiún na hUachtaránachta). Sistnevnte er Irlands kollektive visestatsoverhode.

Type nummerering
  1. ^ Sør-Irlands parlament, som var blitt opprettet gjennom Government of Ireland Act 1920, bestod også av et overhus (Senate of Southern Ireland) og et underhus (House of Commons of Southern Ireland). De to husene møttes formelt 28. Juni 1921 i Royal College of Science for Ireland i en statsåpning av Irlands siste stattholder Edmund FitzAlan-Howard. Lord Chancellor of Ireland, John Ross (1849–1929), var ex offico president for Sør-Irlands senat (Senate of Southern Ireland). Han var for syk til å være til stede på møtet, som ble ledet av Nugent Everard (1849–1929).[2] Sør-Irlands parlament ble formelt oppløst av Irlands stattholder, Edmund FitzAlan-Howard, 27. mai 1922.[3]
  2. ^ Det siste møtet i Den irske fristatens senat ble holdt 19. mai 1936. Senatet ble avskaffet 29. mai 1936. Valget til det nye Senatet, organisert i samsvar med grunnloven av 1937, ble holdt 28. mars 1938. Det første møtet ble holdt 27. april 1938.
