Den østerrikske skole i samfunnsøkonomi blir brukt om Carl Menger (1840-1921) og de personene som ble tiltrukket av hans lære. Banebrytende er hans subjektive nytteteori, presentert i hans bok fra 1871, Grundsätze der Volkswirtschaftslehre. Subjektive og individuelle nytteskalaer danner utgangspunkt for dannelsen av relative markedspriser.
