Gerhard O. Forde (født 10. september 1927 i Pope County i Minnesota i USA, død 9. august 2005) var en amerikansk luthersk teolog som skrev meget om den protestantiske reformasjon og luthersk teologi og tradisjon.

Liv og virke

Bakgrunn

Gerhard Olaf Forde ble født i Pope County og vokste opp nær Starbuck i dette countyet, som historisk er preget av betydelig norsk innvandring på 1800-tallet. Han var sønn av Gerhard Olavus (1884–1964) og Hannah (Halvorson) Forde (1888–1928). Han fikk B.A.- grad fra Luther College i 1950, gikk på University of Wisconsin–Madison i ett år, og tok deretter Bachelor of Theology-graden fra Luther Seminary i 1955. Han tok doktorgrad i teologi fra Harvard Divinity School i 1967. Forde studerte også ved Universitetet i Tübingen og var den lutherske veileder ved Mansfield College ved Oxford University i perioden 1968–1970. Han tilbrakte også sabbatsår ved Harvard (1972–73), Strasbourg (1979–80), og St. John's University Institute for Ecumenical and Cultural Research i Collegeville i Minnesota (1988).

Karriere

Gerhard Forde var pastor i American Lutheran Church og senere i Evangelical Lutheran Church in America etter dens grunnleggelse. Fordes lærerkarriere begynte ved St. Olaf College i Northfield i Minnesota, der han underviste i religion 1955–56. Gerhard Forde ble del av Luther Seminarys fakultet som foreleser i kirkehistorie i 1959–1961. Etter å ha flyttet over til Luther College i Decorah i Iowa som assisterende professor i religion i 1961–1963, vendte han tilbake til seminaret som instruktør i 1964 og ble gjort til professor ti år senere. Selv etter at han gikk av i 1998, forble han aktiv som lærer og foreleser i flere år.

Som medlem av American Academy of Religion var Forde også aktiv som medlem av styret for dialog, A Journal of Theology; den luthersk-katolske dialog; kommisjonen for den planlagte nye lutherske kirke; og redaksjonen for Lutheran Quarterly.

Radikal lutherdom

I 1987 ble Lutheran Quarterly relansert midt i forhandlingene som førte til dannelsen av Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. I hovedbidraget av tidsskriftets «nye serie» presenterte Forde en fremtidsvisjon for amerikansk lutherdom med tittelen «Radical Lutheranism».[5] I artikkelen tok Forde opp den lutherske identitets fremtid, som han så på som i stor grad bundet til etnisk og kulturell bakgrunn, ikke den teologiske identiteten fremmet av Forde som han uttalte som en dedikasjon til Jesu Kristi «radikale» evangelium og konseptet om rettferdiggjørelse ved tro.

«We should realize first of all that what is at stake on the current scene is certainly not Lutheranism as such. Lutheranism has no particular claim or right to existence. Rather, what is at stake is the radical gospel, radical grace, the eschatological nature of the gospel of Jesus Christ crucified and risen as put in its most uncompromising and unconditional form by St. Paul. What is at stake is a mode of doing theology and a practice in church and society derived from that radical statement of the gospel. ... I do want to pursue the proposition that Lutheranism especially in America might find its identity not by compromising with American religion but by becoming more radical about the gospel it has received. That is to say, Lutherans should become radicals, preachers of a gospel so radical that it puts the old to death and calls forth the new, and practitioners of the life that entails 'for the time being.'»: 5–6 

Forde skulle fortsette med å utdype konseptet radikal lutherdom, mest poengtert i sin hans senere bok On Being a Theologian of the Cross: Reflections on Luther's Heidelberg Disputation, 1518 og essays publisert i A More Radical Gospel.
