William Crichton did not participate at building of the ship. Instead, he supervised the engine construction at Cowie & Eriksson engineering works. Crichton did not start a new company but he became owner of Cowie & Eriksson in 1862 and renamed it W:m Crichton & C:o. Later he also bought Åbo Skeppswarf (the former Gamla Warfsbolaget i Åbo). William Crichton died in 1889 and W:m Crichton & C:o went bankrupt in 1913, after which a company called Aktiebolaget Crichton was founded to continue the operations. Ab Crichton went together with its neighbour Ab Vulcan in 1924, and Ab Crichton-Vulcan Oy was founded. So William Crichton did not start Crichton-Vulcan; the company was established 35 years after his death. The initiator for the merger was Allan Staffans, the manager of Ab Vulcan. Crichton-Vulcan was subsequently bought by Maskin- och Brobyggnads Ab in the 1930s, later the company became acquired by Wärtsilä. The yard was called Wärtsilä Crichton-Vulcan until end of 1965. In beginning of 1966 it was renamed Wärtsilä Turku Shipyard (Wärtsilä Turun Telakka / Wärtsilä Åbovarvet in Finnish and Swedish) under decree of the Wärtsilä manager Wilhelm Wahlforss. --Gwafton (diskusjon) 19. des. 2015 kl. 20:07 (CET)[svar]
