Bill Brandt (født 3. mai 1904, død 20. desember 1983) var en innflytelsesrik britisk fotograf og fotojournalist, kjent for sine høykontrast bilder av det britisk samfunn og hans forvridde akt- og landskapsfotografier.
Liv og virke[rediger | rediger kilde]
Født i Hamburg, Tyskland, Brandt hadde en britisk far og en tysk mor. Han vokste opp under den første verdenskrig og kom senere i livet, med nazismens fremvekst, til å fornekte sitt tyske opphav og påsto at han var født i Sør-London.[10]
På slutten av 20-tallet, i 1927, reiste han til Wien hvor han ved hjelp av dr. Eugenie Schwarzwald fikk seg en jobb ved et portrettstudio. Det var sannsynligvis også hun som introduserte Brandt for Ezra Pound, noe som igjen førte til at Brand fikk en svært verdifull introduksjon til Mann Ray som han endte opp med å jobbe for i flere måneder i 1930.[10]
I 1933 flyttet Brandt til London hvor han begynte å dokumentere alle nivåer av det britiske samfunnet. Denne typen dokumentarfotografi var svært uvanlig på den tiden. I henholdsvis 1936 og 1938 utga han 2 bøker, The English at Home og A Night in London som inneholdt hans bilder. Han var en regelmessig bidragsyter til flere magasiner som f.eks Lilliput, Picture Post, og Harper's Bazaar. Under Blitzen i Londong i 1940, fikk han i oppdrag av Propagandaminesteriet å dokumentere Londons bomberom.
Brandt fortsatte sin karriere som fotograf under og etter andre verdenskrig og ga bla. ut flere fotografiske bøker på 40, 50 og 60-tallet. Brandt er ansett for å være blant Storbritannias mest innflytelsesrike fotografer fra det 19 århundret og har også oppnådd en stor internasjonal anerkjennelse for sitt arbeid.[11]
