Text Appearing Before Image:
irfather refused at first to believe. But when con-vinced, the aged patriarch uprose in a sudden ecsta-sy of joy: I will go and see him before I die. Thiswas just what Joseph had advised. Not more thantwo years of the famine had passed; and, in the fivestill to come, the Israelites could not possibly survivein Palestine. Therefore Joseph wished the entirehousehold, his father, his brothers and their sons, seventy souls in all, beside their wives and ser-vants, to establish themselves in Egypt. Judah brought him word of his fathers coming;and Joseph hastened in his chariot to the very borderof Egypt to welcome Jacob. Happy indeed must thatmeeting have been. The artist Schopin representsJoseph as being accompanied by his own household. He had been wedded in Egypt to Asenath, the daugh-ter of the high priest; and by her he had two youngsons. These advance joyously behind him as herushes to embrace his father. The many wanderingsof Jacob were at an end; he had found a permanenthome at last.
Text Appearing After Image:
BY SIR LAWRENCE ALMA-TADEMA, R. A.^ A CON-TEMPORARY ARTIST BORN IN HOLLAND BUTDWELLING IN ENGLAND. Then Joseph said unto the people. Behold, I havebought you this day, and your land, for Pharaoh: la,here is seed for you, and ye shall sow the land.—Gen., 47, 23. AFTER the reunion of Joseph and his people, his life story has two aspects, one of whichis often overlooked in the joy of the other. He was not only a devoted son and brother, he wasalso, and continued to be, Pharaohs chief vizier, thetrue ruler of all Egypt. As such, he planned and apparently carried out acomplete readjustment of the entire country.Through the remaining five years of the famine hesold grain to the peoj^le in what seemed a hard andgrasping way, receiving in payment first their money^then, when that was gone, their cattle, then theirlands. In the end they had even to sell themselves tohim, becoming slaves for the sake of food. Then andthen only did Joseph change, and take up the partof the generous and merciful
