Catherine Cowley

Catherine Cowley er en engelsk katolsk nonne og finansanalytiker. Hun er Assistant Director ved Heythrop Institute for Religion, Ethics and Public Life i London, and sekretær for Association of Teachers of Moral Theology. Hennes fremste forskningsinteresse er socialetikk særlig relatert til økonomni og finanssektoren.

Før hun ble ordenssøster hos assumpsjonistsøstrene hadde hun arbeidet i private finansinstitusjoner i Londons City.

Hun studerte deretter teologi ved Det pavelige universitet Gregoriana i Roma, og tok senere mastergrad i filosofi og religion og så et doktorat ved Heythrop College med et arbeid om «The Application of Catholic Social Teaching to Business Ethics with particular reference to the Finance Sector».

En bok hun publiserte i 2006, The Value of Money, analyserte finansmarkedene og forutså og advarte mot den utstrakte handelen med derivater:

«Derivatives have quantifiable benefits but unquantifiable risks. In part, this is due lack of transparency and complexity, together with the dynamic nature of the risks hich can spill over into many markets. This is compounded by the market structure and the moral hazard of volatility, whereby the financial sector can generate more business and make bigger profits if assets have a volitile price ... Whole economies can be destabilised by speculative crossborder capital flows, often in the form of derivatives ... »
