Den forekommer i Australia og på Ny-Guinea og D'Entrecasteaux-øyene.

Det er beskrevet fem underarter av sivnonne[2]:
- Lonchura castaneothorax uropygialis (Stresemann & Paludan, 1934) – nordvestlige Ny-Guinea.
- Lonchura castaneothorax sharpii (Madarász, 1894) – Ny-Guinea.
- Lonchura castaneothorax boschmai (Junge, 1952) – vestlige Ny-Guinea.
- Lonchura castaneothorax ramsayi (Delacour, 1943) – sørøstlige Ny-Guinea og D'Entrecasteaux-øyene.
- Lonchura castaneothorax castaneothorax (Gould, 1837) – Australia.
