Totalt 37 arenaer ble brukt under Sommer-OL 2008 som ble holdt i Beijing.

I løpet av mai 2007 hadde byggingen av alle de 31 OL-baserte arenaene startet.[1] Den kinesiske regjeringen investerte i tillegg til disse arenaene, en totalrenovering av seks arenaer utenfor Beijing, samt 59 treningssentre. De største arkitektoniske bygningene som ble bygd for lekene, var Beijings nasjonalstadion, Beijing nasjonale innendørsstadion, Beijing nasjonale vannsportsenter, Olympiaparken konferansesenter, Olympiaparken i Beijing, og Wukesonghallen. Nesten 85% av byggebudsjettet for de seks viktigste arenaer ble finansiert av 2,1 milliarder dollar (RMB ¥ 17,4 milliarder, NOK 12 milliarder) fra bud og anbud. Investeringene var ventet fra selskaper som ønsket eierrettigheter også etter lekene.[2]

Noen øvelser ble holdt utenfor Beijing, som fotball i Qinhuangdao, Shanghai, Shenyang og Tianjin, seiling i Qingdao, og hestesport i Hongkong. Rytterkonkurransen ble altså holdt i Hongkong på grunn av at det er vanskeligere å møte veterinærkravene i Kina enn i Hongkong.[3] Den største arenaen i Sommer-OL 2008 var Beijings nasjonalstadion, også kalt «Fugleredet» på grunn av sin rede-lignende struktur. Stadion ble brukt til både åpnings-og avslutningsseremonien i tillegg til friidrettskonkurransen, og byggingen av arenaen startet den 24. desember 2003. Guangdong olympiastadion var opprinnelig planlagt å være hovedstadion, og ble bygget og ferdigstilt i 2001, men en avgjørelse ble så gjort for å bygge en ny og større stadion i Beijing.[4] I 2001 hadde byen en anbudsprosess for å velge det beste designet. Flere kriterier ble krevet, inkludert muligheten for et uttrekkbart tak, lave vedlikeholdskostnader og muligheter for bruk etter OL.[5] Senere er det også blitt klart at Beijing og Beijing National Stadium skal arrangere VM i friidrett 2015.[6]

Fugleredemodellen ble presentert av arkitektene Jacques Herzog og Pierre de Meuron i samarbeid med Li Xinggang fra Kina Architecture Design og Research Group (CADG) og modellen ble valgt som det endelige designet, av både et profesjonelt panel og av et bredere publikum under en offentlig utstilling. Valget av designet ble offisielt i april 2003.[5]
