Hamilton Cochran (1898–1977) var en amerikansk forfatter av spenningsromaner og sakprosa, fortrinnsvis henlagt til livet på sjøen, ofte med pirater blant hovedfigurene.[1]
Bakgrunn[rediger | rediger kilde]
Hamilton Cochran var sønn av en prest; faren var opptatt av at sønnen skulle få en god utdannelse, og sendte ham til Swarthmore Preparatory School, som var en studieforberedende skole. Imidlertid ble USA like etter involvert i første verdenskrig, og Hamilton Cochran gikk inn i tjeneste på US Coast Guards kutter «Algonquin», som var et av seks skip tilhørende kystvakten som ble sendt til Europa for å delta i kampene der.[2]
Etter første verdenskrig tok Cochran en bachelorgrad i journalistikk ved University of Michigan.[2] Deretter arbeidet han først i

Cochran debuterte som romanforfatter i 1941 med romanen Buccaneer Islands.[2] Den første boken han skrev, var imidlertid These are the Virgin Islands, som var inspirert av at han fra 1931 til 1932 bodde og arbeidet på Saint Thomas, som er en del av øygruppen Jomfruøyene.[2]
Hans etterlatte papirer oppbevares ved biblioteket til Syracuse University.[3]

His father Joseph was a clergyman, sought to give his son a good education and sent him to Swarthmore Preparatory Scholl. April 1917 after the United States declared war on Germany, Hamilton at age 18 left school within a week and enlisted in the United States Coast Guard. Hamilton served on the Coast Guard Cutter ALgonquin, which was one of six warships that the Coast Guard sent to fight in Europe. Cochran attended the University of Michigan and received a Bachelor of Arts degree in journalism. Hamilton after college sailed the Red Star and Munson lines in passenger and freight vessels, worked for Ronald Press as a salesman, served as a vice president of the Diamond Wax Paper Company in Rochester, New York. He also accepted a job as the Commissioner of Public Welfare for the government of the Virgin Islands. In 1937, he wrote is first book entitled: These are the Virgin Islands. In 1941 his first novel was released: Buccaneer Islands. This would be one of thirteen books. He is most well known for Blockade Runners of the Confederacy.
