Hi !

The English translation (by Google) of this article suggests Guy Nixon died in the war. This is not correct; in fact he became a foriegn languages teacher at Elizabeth College, Guernsey in 1946, retiring in 1970. I remember him talking about his skiing exploits.

I can find out his date of death, if you think it worthwhile.

Yours sincerely,

David Waugh

Thanks a lot Davidwaughhastings . Definitely worthwhile. I have purchased the book used as a source so I can find out what it says. Also found an article in The Times giving his record as 31 meters [[1]]. All additional information is very welcome. With sources please. Regards. --ツDyveldi☯ prat ✉ post 8. aug. 2018 kl. 21:39 (CEST)[svar]
Ashburner: The history of ski jumping has arrived. On page 71 it says «Guy Nixon sadly disappeared during the War, but Colin Wyatt survived, and combined a distinguished career as an entomologist who specialised in butterflies, with that as a writer on the more remote an little explored mountain ranges of the world.» The book does not say that Nixon died and disappeared might mean that he for a while was unaccounted for, but later found his way back home. As he did not pursue a distinguished academic career Ashburner might have found information that he was missing and not taken time to search for a confirmation that he was declared dead. Ordinary lives are more difficult to trace than the distinquished ones and research for a book published in 2002 was far more difficult than it is in the age of the digitalization which since have materialized in this age of the Internet. It is still worthwhile to try to find out what actually happened.
- On page 70 the book has his picture. If you take time to borrow the book at a library you might recognize your teacher.
- There is also a lot of personal information missing in the article like year (place and date) of birth, education (he was at Cambridge, but what did he study) and so on. Trying to find out more is definitely worthwhile. ツDyveldi☯ prat ✉ post 27. aug. 2018 kl. 19:59 (CEST)[svar]
