Garrett James Hardin (født 21. april 1915, død 14. september 2003) var en betydelig økolog fra USA, som var spesielt opptatt av overbefolkning og som lanserte begrepet allmenningens tragedie. I nekrologen i New York Times ble han omtalt som «..en økolog som henledet oppmerksomheten på skaden som uskyldige handlinger av enkeltindivider kan påføre miljøet».[1] Han var mest kjent for formuleringa av slike temar i sitt berømte essay fra 1968, The Tragedy of the Commons.[2] Han er også kjent for Hardins første økologiske lov: «Du kan ikke bare gjøre en ting».

Hardin ble bachelor i naturvitenskap, zoologi ved University of Chicago i 1936 og PhD i mikrobiologi fra Stanford University i 1941. Han var professor i humanøkologi ved University of California, Santa Barbara fra 1946 til han formelt gikk av i 1978.
En av hans viktigste fokusområder var overbefolkning. Dette førte til skriverier om temaer som abort, immigrasjon og sosiobiologi, hvilket førte til kritikk fra både høyre- og venstresida i USA-politikk.
