Malariavaksiner er vaksiner som benyttes for å forebygge malaria. Den eneste godkjente vaksine per 2021, er RTS,S, kjent som Mosquirix.[1] Den krever fire injeksjoner.[1]
Det pågår forskning på flere andre vaksinekandidater. Den mest lovende av dem som er kommet inn i utprøvingsstadiet er R21/Matrix-M, med en effektivitet på 77% i tidlige utprøvinger, og vesentlig høyere antistoffnivåer enn RTS,S-vaksinen.[2] Denne vaksinekandidaten var den første som syntes å ha nådd World Health Organizations (WHO) mål om at malariavaksiner burde ha i det minste 75% effektivitet.[3][2] Dersom den vaksinen skulle bli godkjent, kan over 200 millioner doser produseres årlig av Serum Institute of India.[2]
Andre malariavaksiner under utvikling er PfSPZ-vaksinen[4][5], en saRNA-vaksine[6], SPf66[7] og andre.
Det skjelnes mellom fire malariabærende arter som er farlige for mennesker. De overføres alle ved stikk av malariamyggen. En femte er lite farlig - slik at man sier at den kan gi benign malaria. Teoretisk måtte man utvikle egne vaksiner for hver av de fire farlige artene. Men ettersom plasmodium falciparum forårsaker 80% av all sykdomstilfeller og 90% av alle dødsfall i verden, konsenterer forskningen seg om denne arten.[8] Arten Plasmodium vivax er langt vanligere, og utløser malari tertiana, men er altså mindre farlig for mennesker. De øvrige er P. ovale (særlig i Afrika, også i Sørøstasia), P. malariae (svært utbredt, nærmest ufarlig) og P. knowlesi (Sørøstasia).
