The word "festival" appears in many references to India. Festivals of different kinds are held all throughout the country at all times of the year. People in the country can be broadly classified into three categories: religious, social, and cultural. Despite their many differences, these people have found a way to coexist peacefully. India is a secular nation, thus its residents can freely observe their own faith and customs, within reason. Celebrations like festivals tend to bring out the best in Indians. At celebrations, old grudges are set aside and everyone is welcomed with open arms. Most of the time, people from diverse communities will come together to celebrate one of these festivals.

In India, there is a great deal of religious tolerance. Participation in each other's festivals has helped maintain its secular legitimacy and brought the population closer together. Festivals in India are celebrated for a wide variety of reasons. As the seasons change, the rains arrive, and the moon is full, some of these rituals are celebrated. Others are commemorated on the anniversaries of the births of religious leaders, saints, and gurus. Most of these celebrations are held all over India, but under different names. The festivities include traditional prayers or rituals, asking for blessings, making new acquaintances, decorating the home, buying new clothes, dancing, and feasting. With so many events happening all around the country, it can be difficult to keep track of them all. It's possible to go on and on about the many festivals observed in India. Deepawali, Holi, Dussehra, Navratri, Raksha Bandhan, Christmas, Buddha Purnima, Ramadan, Eid, Baisakhi, Mahavir Jayanti, etc. are only some of the important festivals observed. Festivals like Pongal, Onam, Bihu, etc. have their roots in certain regions. Important national festivities include not just independence days but also Gandhi Jayanti and Republic Day. They receive the same grandiose treatment as everybody else being honored.
