Gazas gamleby
Gamlebyen i Gaza er hoveddelen av byen Gazas historiske sentrum. Mestedels ligger den på en lav men distinkt høyde i landskapet.
Det var dette som var det Gaza som har hatt permanent bosetting fra før 3000 år f.Kr. Den var i eldre tid, og helt frem til 1100 e.Kr., en viktig handelsby på grunn av sin beliggenhet ved Middelhavet, og langs nord-sør-handelsveien (Via Maris) fra Egypt og nord- og øst til Lilleasia og via Damaskus til rikene langs Eufrat og Tigris.

Den er inndelt i to kvarterer. I nord er Daraj-kvarteret (også kjent som det muslimske kvarter), og det sørlige Zaytun-kvarteret (som historisk rommet det jødiske kvarter og det kristne kvarter.)
De fleste byggverk her stammer fra mamlukkenes og osmanenes epoker, og noen ble bygd på toppen av eldre strukturer. Den aller eldste del av Gamlebyen dekker 1,6 km2.
Det er syv historiske porter som fører inn i Gamlebyen: Bab Asqalan (Askalonporten), Bab al-Darum (Deir al-Balah-porten), Bab al-Bahr (Havsporten - med kort vei til kysten), Bab Marnas (Marnasporten), Bab al-Baladiyah (Byporten), Bab al-Khalil (Hebronporten), og Bab al-Muntar (Tell al-Muntar-porten).[1]
Noen av de eldre bygninger i Gamlebyen oppviser dekorativt ablaq-stilen (أبلق) som har alternerende lag av rødt og hvitt murarbeide, kjent fra mamlukkisk tid. I Daraj er Gullmarkedet (Qissariya) og Gazas store moské (den eldste moskéen i Gaza)[2] og Sayed al-Hashim-moskéen.[3] I Zaytun ligger Sankt Porfyrios' kirke, Katib al-Wilaya-moskéen og Hamam as-Sammara («Samaritanerens badehus»).[4]
