Beskrivelse

Beskrivelse Arrival of Burke, Wills and King at the deserted camp at Cooper's Creek, Sunday evening, 21st April 1861, National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne. Note: Inspired by the events of Australian history, Longstaff’s “Arrival of Burke, Wills and King...” depicts the three Australian men among the rough bush landscape. The composition is evenly balanced due to the different placement of the men and trees. Whilst the dark brown and green colours add an element of survival and danger of the men as they are isolated in bushland with little resources. Longstaff choose to paint this work, to show an audience of the strong struggle that these men had to go through, relating it to the Australian human spirit similar to those diggers who fought in the wars.
