Albumet nådde nr. 1 på både Billboard 200 og Top Soul Albums listene. That's the Way of the World har også solgt til Triple Platinum i USA, RIAA.[4][5][6]

Singelen, "Shining Star", fra albumet nådde nummer en på både Billboard Hot 100 og Hot Soul Singles listene. "Shining Star" vant en Grammy Award for beste R&B-opptreden av en duo eller gruppe med vokal. Albumets tittelspor nådde nr. 5 på Billboard Hot Soul Singles listen og nr. 12 på Hot 100-listen.[7]
