BeskrivelseArchdiocese of Salzburg, circa 1700.jpg
English: When dealing with the Holy Roman Empire, the words bishopric and diocese are not interchangeable. The great majority of German bishops were prince-bishops: they ruled a secular prince-bishopric (Hochstift) at the same time as they administered a larger diocese. The same applied to an archbishop, but at one level higher.
The Archbishop of Salzburg wore three hats: as prince, he was the political ruler of his Hochstift (in orange on the map); as bishop, he administered a diocese that extended deep into Austria and the Habsburg Monarchy; as archbishop, he supervised several suffragant dioceses that covered much of Germany. Outside his own Hochstift his powers were purely spiritual/ecclesiastical and limited since the bishops rather than the archbishops were the ones mostly responsible in ecclesiastical matters.
