Sommer-OL 1980 ble arrangert i Moskva i Sovjetunionen fra 19. juli til 3. august 1980.

Sovjetunionen vant flest gullmedaljer med 80 og de vant 195 medaljer totalt. Norge deltok ikke i lekene, men ble med på en internasjonal boikott i protest mot Sovjetunionens invasjon av Afghanistan.

Valg av vertsby

Moskva ble valgt ved avstemning under den internasjonale olympiske komités 75. sesjon i Wien i Østerrike 13. oktober 1974.[2][3]

Deltakelse

Til sammen 81 land deltok i de olympiske sommerlekene i Moskva. Utøverne fra Liberia trakk seg etter å ha marsjert inn under åpningsseremonien, så 80 land deltok i konkurranser. På tross av den omfattende boikotten gjorde seks land sin OL-debut i 1980: Angola, Botswana, Jordan, Laos, Mosambik og Seychellene. Kypros var med for første gang i Sommer-OL, men hadde vært med tidligere i Vinter-OL i Lake Placid. Sri Lanka deltok for første gang under nytt navn (tidligere som Ceylon).

USA og 64 andre nasjoner boikottet lekene på grunn av Sovjetunionens invasjon av Afghanistan. I tillegg var det utøvere fra 13 nasjoner, blant andre fra Storbritannia, Frankrike og Italia som konkurrerte under OL-flagget. Utøverne fra de tre nasjonene New Zealand, Spania og Portugal konkurrerte under sine respektive nasjonale olympiske komiteers flagg.

Boikott

68 nasjonale olympiske komiteer som var invintert til Sommer-OL 1980, pluss Qatar, valgte å boikotte lekene av forskjellige årsaker. Qatars nasjonale olympiske komité ble godkjent i februar 1980, men de valgte å ikke delta. Taiwan nektet å delta etter at de ble pålagt av IOK å benytte navnet «Kinesisk Taipei». Kina forlangte denne løsningen som en forutsetning for at de skulle delta i lekene. Kina valgte til tross for dette å ikke sende utøvere allikevel.[29][30][31]
