Pat Martino (født 25. august 1944, død 1. november 2021) var en jazzgitarist og komponist. Han er kjent for sin matematiske tilnærming til instrumentet (han ga ut lærebøker for eksempel Linear Expressions) og avansert kunnskap om musikk og jazz teori.
Biografi[rediger | rediger kilde]
Martino ble født Pat Azzara i Sør-Philadelphia. Han begynte å spille profesjonelt i en alder av 15 etter å ha flyttet til New York City. Han bodde i en periode med Les Paul og begynte å spille på jazzklubber som Smalls Paradis. Han flyttet senere inn i en suite på President Hotel på 48th Street. Han spilte på Smalls seks måneder i året, og om sommeren spille han på Club Harlem i Atlantic City.
Martino spilte og utga plater med artister som Lloyd Pris, Willis Jackson og Eric Kloss tidlig i sin karriere. Han jobbet også med jazzorganister som Charles Earland, Richard "Groove" Holmes, Jack McDuff, Don Patterson, Trudy Pitts, Jimmy Smith, Gene Ludwig, Bobby Pierce, og Joey DeFrancesco.
Martino var gift med Ayako Asahi Martino, som han møtte i Tokyo, Japan, i 1995. De bodde sammen i Philadelphia.
Han turnerte over hele verden og ble utnevnt til Guitar Player of the Year 2004 av Down Beat magazines Reader's Poll 2004. I 2006 ble albumet East! reutgitt av Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab lansert på Ultradisc UHR SACD.
