Jaroslav Jan Pelikan (født 17. desember 1923 i Akron i Ohio i USA, død 13. mai 2006 i Hamden i Connecticut) var en amerikansk kristendomshistoriker, professor i historie ved Yale University og en fremtredende intellektuell.

Bakgrunn[rediger | rediger kilde]

Pelikan ble født i Ohio som sønn av en serbisk mor og slovakisk far, og barnebarnet av en biskop i den slovakiske lutherske kirke.[trenger referanse] Da han var to og et halvt år gammel begynte han å skrive på skrivemaskin, og lærte tidlig å snakke slovakisk, tsjekkisk, tysk og engelsk.[trenger referanse] I løpet av skoleårene lærte han seg også gresk, latin, serbisk, russisk og hebraisk. I 1946 ble han både teologisk kandidat ved Concordia Theological Seminary i Saint Louis og doktorgrad ved University of Chicago.

I 1946 giftet han seg med Sylvia Pauline Burica, som han hadde tre barn med. Pelikan ble luthersk pastor. Det ar han i mange år, men paret konverterte til den ortodokse kirke mange år etter, i 1998.

Etter å ha undervist ved forskjellige universiteter, ble han Sterling Professor of History ved Yale University i 1972. Blant hans akademiske oppgaver var ledelse av American Academy of Arts and Sciences og American Academy of Political and Social Science. Han grunnla Library of Congress Research Council, som han også var leder av.

I 2004 ble han og Paul Ricoeur tildelt Kluge-prisen.[18] Han ble æresdoktor i juss fra Harvard University i 1998, og i 1992 gav han Gifford-forelesningene.

Pelicans forfatterskap handler om kultur, ideer og religion, der han delvis bidro til en gjenopplivet interesse for øst-ortodoks kristendom, hovedsakelig i det bysantinske rike, og delvis til kunsthistoriske aspekter ved kirkehistorien.[trenger referanse] Hans verk, The Christian Tradition: A History of the Development of Doctrine, ble utgitt i fem bind 1971–1989, og gir en omfattende nytolkning av tradisjonen i strid med den rådende tolkning som basert på individuelle enkeltteologers betydning.[trenger referanse] Andre arbeider i kristendommens historie er for eksempel Jesus Through the Centuries (1985) som omhandler «Jesus-begrepet» gjennom århundrene, og The Bible and Constitution (2004) om forholdet mellom Bibelen og konstitusjonell rett.
