The engraving shows the god Thor dressed up as Freyja, with artificial breasts, a necklace (Brísingamen) and a keychain. Loki, also dressed as a woman, is fixing up Thor's headgear. Loki appears to be enjoying himself, Thor does not. The depiction closely follows the description in strophes 15-20 of Þrymskviða. Near the bottom middle there are the initials of Carl Larsson (1853-1919), the artist, written with runes. In the bottom left corner there is the signature of Gunnar Forssell (1859-1903), the xylographer. The image list on page 468 in the book describes this image as "Tor såsom Freya, Loke brudtärna", i.e. Tor (Thor, Þórr) as Freyja, Loke (Loki) as a bridesmaid. |

Sander's Edda was published in 1893, placing it in the public domain in the United States. More than 70 years have passed since the deaths of both the original artist (Larsson) and the xylographer (Forssell), securing public domain status in Sweden and much of the rest of the world. My (rather poor and off-centered) photographic reproduction of the page may be ineligible for copyright but in case it is not I place it into the public domain.
