Beskrivelse

The engraving shows the god Thor dressed up as Freyja, with artificial breasts, a necklace (Brísingamen) and a keychain. Loki, also dressed as a woman, is fixing up Thor's headgear. Loki appears to be enjoying himself, Thor does not. The depiction closely follows the description in strophes 15-20 of Þrymskviða.

Near the bottom middle there are the initials of Carl Larsson (1853-1919), the artist, written with runes. In the bottom left corner there is the signature of Gunnar Forssell (1859-1903), the xylographer.

The image list on page 468 in the book describes this image as "Tor såsom Freya, Loke brudtärna", i.e. Tor (Thor, Þórr) as Freyja, Loke (Loki) as a bridesmaid.
Dato Published in 1893.
Kilde/Fotograf The image is found on page 105 of Fredrik Sander's 1893 edition of the Poetic Edda; Edda Sämund den vises : skaldeverk af fornnordiska myt- och hjältesånger om de götiska eller germaniska folkens gamla gudatro, sagominnen och vandringar / öfversättning från isländskan af Fredrik Sander ; med bilder af nordiska konstnärer. Stockholm, Norstedt. I (Haukur Þorgeirsson) took a picture of that page with a handheld camera. My original uploads is an unmodified version of that picture and shows not only the image described but also its context. My other upload is cropped to the engraving itself and has been color-corrected and modified with the 'perspective' tool in GIMP.

(Gjenbruk av denne filen)

Sander's Edda was published in 1893, placing it in the public domain in the United States. More than 70 years have passed since the deaths of both the original artist (Larsson) and the xylographer (Forssell), securing public domain status in Sweden and much of the rest of the world. My (rather poor and off-centered) photographic reproduction of the page may be ineligible for copyright but in case it is not I place it into the public domain.

This is a faithful photographic reproduction of a two-dimensional, public domain work of art. The work of art itself is in the public domain for the following reason:
Public domain

Dette verket er offentlig eiendom i Norge, EU og land der den opphavsrettslige vernetiden etter opphavsmannens død er 100 år eller kortere. Merk at noen land har lengre vernetid.

This work is in the public domain in the United States because it was published (or registered with the U.S. Copyright Office) before January 1, 1929.

The official position taken by the Wikimedia Foundation is that "faithful reproductions of two-dimensional public domain works of art are public domain".
This photographic reproduction is therefore also considered to be in the public domain in the United States. In other jurisdictions, re-use of this content may be restricted; see Reuse of PD-Art photographs for details.
