English: A cast copper alloy clapper bell dating from the Roman period. . It is conical in shape with a circular base and straight sides, measuring 32.46mm tall. At the top is a suspension loop which is slightly bent, pointed-oval in shape and with a circular hole. Below the base of the loop is a raised area, which at one point has a deep groove running around it. There is also a circumferential raised rib or line a few millimetres from the rim; the rim is straight, very slightly cracked and bent in places, and is 26.48mm in diameter at its widest point and 22.1mm in diameter at its narrowest point.

There are two casting seams which are at opposite sides of the bell, running vertically from the base rim to the apex just below the sides of the suspension loop. The body of the bell has a hole a few millimetres from one of the casting seams, just above the raised line. Inside the bell are the iron remains of the suspension system for the clapper. The bell has an uneven dark green/light green patina which suggests a possible tinning.

There are several parallels for this bell on the PAS database. SWYOR-FE6F46 and BERK-9AF9C4 refer to a similar bell found unstratified at Colchester (Crummy 1995: 127, no. 4168). SF-DB21A5 can be paralleled by a bell from Dragonby, a late Iron Age and Romano-British settlement in North Lincolnshire, which was discovered in association with other late Roman artefacts (May 1996, 281, 283, fig 11.29, no 134). Finally, SF-A51835 is similar to bells discovered at Stonham Aspal, Suffolk and at the Romano-British small town at Wanborough (Anderson, Wacher and Fitzpatrick 2001, 77-78, fig 29, no 7). The published examples of Roman bells tend to have a more rounded shape than this example.

As yet, no published examples of straight-sided conical bells recovered from dateable contexts have been located, making it impossible to date this example securely despite the strong suggestion of a Roman date. It has even been suggested that some could be mis-identified candlesnuffers.
