Beskrivelse

The illustration for the book Jonathan Livingston Seagull (Richard Bach), suggested as a replacement of the book cover that looks very like advertisement and also I do not like its license. I think, this picture (composed using resources from our Commons) reflects the key points of the book: conflict between the individual and rules of society, the mastership that was reached alone, the friendship and the returning to forgive. I used the images 800px-Bird_at_sunset.jpg and Seabirds_in_flight.jpg. Audrius Meškauskas.

Some details

  • The three birds on the top left are derived from the single image, cloning and then resizing (to hide the undesired effect of full similarity). This creates an impression that birds are performing some high - velocity air stunt where position of near every feather is significant.
  • This picture is about the beginning of the third part of the book (returning back). The small team is heading down and is about to cross the boundary between the two worlds.
  • It seemed important for me to put several co-operating "Jonathans" rather than one and alone.
  • From a larger distance, when all birds are not clearly seen, the picture resembles early morning or late evening in winter, creating the impression of rather cold and difficult world. This is how I see the "Jonathan" now, twenty years after first reading it.

The birds are not identifiable to species; probably plovers or sandpipers, definitely not gulls.

The Seabirds_in_flight.jpg

The permission to use that image in this derived work was granted separately after contacting the author.

The original image can be found at:

Mind that sxc license is not compatible with Wikipedia Commons rules in general.

A.W.J.M. van der Borght has been contacted at 21:21, 5 July 2007 (UTC) asking for permission, with the following message:

Copyright permission for the seagull flock image.

Hello, van der Borght

I have used you picture, http://www.sxc.hu/browse.phtml?f=view&id=213627, as one of the two parts for the Wikipedia illustration on article about Richard's Bach book "Jonathan Livingston Seagull". I did this because the picture was present in Wikipedia Commons under the license "permission granted for any purpose".

It was recently discovered that pictures from the sxc site cannot be used in Wikipedia Commons automatically, so both yours and mine images were deleted. Would you be so kind as grant explicitly permission to use the figure as part of the derived work at Image:Jonathan_Livingston_Seagull_figure.jpg ? This derived picture is under GFDL license.

So far, I am removing the flock from this illustration with the hope to get either your agreement or a replacement.

With respect Audrius Meskauskas (audriusa)

The following answer was received:

Dear Audrius,

I have no problem with you using the stated picture and grant you right of use. Success with your ventures.

Regards,

A.W.J.M. van der Borght

So, the legal status of the flock seems cleared now. The full text of the message can be found at Image talk:Jonathan Livingston Seagull figure.jpg/Flock here.
