Barbara Gracey Thompson (født 27. juli 1944, død 9. juli 2022) var en engelsk jazzsaksofonist. Hun studerte klarinett, fløyte, piano og klassisk komposisjon ved Royal College of Music, men musikken til Duke Ellington og John Coltrane fikk henne til å skifte felt til jazz og saksofon.

Karriere[rediger | rediger kilde]

Rundt 1970 var Thompson en del av Neil Ardleys New Jazz Orchestra[8] og dukket også opp på album med ektemannen Jon Hisemans band Colosseum. Fra 1975 var hun med på å stifte tre band: United Jazz and Rock Ensemble, Barbara Thompsons Jubiaba og Barbara Thompsons Paraphernalia.[9][10][11][12][13]

Hun ble tildelt MBE (Most Excellent Order of the British Empire) i 1996 for sitt arbeid med musikk. På grunn av Parkinsons sykdom, som ble diagnostisert i 1997, trakk hun seg som aktiv saksofonist i 2001 med en avskjedsturne[11]. Etter en periode utelukkende som komponist, kom hun tilbake til scenen i 2003. Hun begynte også å gi ut album igjen, In the Eye of a Storm som er en fin samling av sanger inkludert en tidligere uutgitt liveversjon av den berømte "Little Annie-Ooh" (som hun laget til sin datter) spilt inn i Wien i 2001.

Hun har spilt på en rekke andre musikeres album, som Manfred Mann's Earth Bands The Roaring Silence og 2006.

Thompson samarbeidet med Andrew Lloyd Webber på musikaler som Cats og Starlight Express, Requiem og Lloyd Webbers 1978 classical-fusion album Variations, som han laget for sin bror, cellisten Julian Lloyd Webber. Hun skrev flere klassiske komposisjoner, musikk for film og fjernsyn, en egen musikal og sanger for United Jazz and Rock Ensemble, Barbara Thompsons Paraphernalia og storbandet Moving Parts.[14]

Hun komponerte og spilte tittelmelodien til krimserien Detektiv Jack Frost, som ble vist av NRK på fredager i 2001.

Hun spilte også fløyte på Jeff Waynes musikkversjon av The War of the Worlds.

Barbara Thompson var gift med trommeslager Jon Hiseman fra Colosseum fra 1967 til hans død i 2018.[9] Han var kjent som en dyktig trommeslager og grunnleggeren av bandet Colosseum. Parets sønn Marcus ble født i 1972, og datteren Anna (nå kjent som sanger / låtskriver Ana Gracey) i 1975.[9]
