Hilda Roderick Ellis Davidson (født Hilda Roderick Ellis 1. oktober 1914, død 6. januar 2006) var en engelsk religionsforsker av folkeminne og mytologier. Hennes hovedområde var germansk (herunder også norrøn mytologi) og keltisk religion.

Som metode brukte Davidson litterært, historisk og arkeologisk kildemateriale som utgangspunkt for analyser av tradisjonelle nordeuropeiske forestillinger og skikker. Hennes bok Gods and Myths of Northern Europe fra 1964 (oversatt til dansk av Gunnar Nissen og redigert av Thorkild Ramskou som Nordens guder og myter i 1967) regnes stadig som en av viktigste beskrivelser av germansk mytologi; og på blant annet den bakgrunn beskrives som en meget betydelig bidragsyter til studiet av nordisk religion og norrøn mytologi.[5] Likesom mange av hennes øvrige publikasjoner ble dette verk utgitt under navnet H.R. Ellis Davidson. Davidson var medlem av Society of Antiquaries, og var formann for Folklore Society fra 1974 til 1976, som hun var medlem av fra 1949 til 1986.[6]

Hilda Roderick Ellis ble født i Bebington, Wirral, Cheshire, i 1914. Hun oppnådde eksamen med høyeste utmerkelse fra Newnham College ved University of Cambridge i engelsk, arkeologi og antropologi. Deretter begynte hun på studier av norrøn hedendom.[7] I 1943 utga hun under sitt pikenavn Hilda Ellis sin første bok: The Road to Hel: A Study of the Conception of the Dead in Old Norse Literature.[7] Davidson var foreleser ved Royal Holloway College fra 1939 til 1944, deretter på Birbeck College.[7] I 1949 ble hun medlem av Folklore Society.[7]

Davidson ble i 1969 ansatt som forsker på Lucy Cavendish College på University of Cambridge. I 1971 ble hun lektor, og i 1974 ble hun utnevnt til fellow.[8] I 1980 begynte Davidson å arbeide på en biografi om Katharine Mary Briggs, en britisk forfatter av folkeminne, og den ble utgitt i 1986.[8] I 1985 mottok Davidson medaljen «Folklore Society's Coote Lake», og hennes verk fra 1988, Myths and Symbols of Pagan Europe ble tildelt Katharine Briggs-prisen.[8] Davidson var æresmedlem av Folklore Society fra 1985, og hun grunnla Katharine Briggs Club i januar 1987.[9] Klubbens tre første publikasjoner ble redigert av Davidson, og den tredje ble til og med dedikert henne.[9]

En annen av Davidsons store interesser var forskningshistorisk studie av folkeminne, som blant annet i samarbeid med Carmen Blacker førte til utgivelsen av en essaysamling ved tittelen Women and Tradition: A Neglected Group of Folklorists (2000). I Davidsons senere verker fokuserte hun især på de kulturelle og religiøse forbindelser mellom de germanske og keltiske kulturer. Dette arbeidet ble presentert på en rekke symposier kalt Nordic-Celtic-Baltic Legend i Irland og København i løpet av 1990-tallet.[7] I 2005 ble hennes helbred for dårlig til å kunne reise.[7]

I hennes siste år var hun ansvarlig for Cambridge Folklore Group.[10] og utover dette fungerte hun som klokker og kirkeverge ved hennes lokale kirke.[8] Davidson døde i Kent i januar 2006, 91 år gammel. Hun etterlot seg to barn og ti barnebarn.
