Gillian Rubinstein (født 29. august 1942 i Berkhamsted i England) er en britisk-australsk forfatter og dramatiker. Hun skriver også under pseudonymet Lian Hearn.

Biografi

Rubinsteins far døde i 1950. Da moren giftet seg på nytt noen år senere, flyttet hun med sin nye familie til Nigeria. Hun returnerte senere til England for å studere moderne språk ved Oxford University. Etter studiene arbeidet hun som filmkritiker og redaktør i London, før hun med sin ektemann bosatte seg i Oxford og etablerte seg som dramatiker. I 1973 flyttet familien til Australia.

I 1986 debuterte Rubinstein som barnebokforfatter med Space Demons. Hennes barnebøker er blitt belønnet med en lang rekke priser og utmerkelser.

Rubinstein har hatt en livslang interesse for Japan og japansk litteratur, hun har besøkt landet mange ganger og studert japansk. Hun skrev (som Lian Hearn) ny innledning for Anna Hartshornes bok Japan and Her People (2207). I 1999 hadde hun et lengre opphold i landet for å arbeide med et prosjekt som senere ble til Tales of the Otori, en fem-binds bestselgende fantasy-serie lagt til et fiktivt øyland inspirert av føydaltidens Japan. Første bind Across the Nightingale Floor, ble utgitt i 2001. Hun valgte å utgi serien under pseudonymet Lian Hearn for å holde den adskilt fra sine barnebøker.

Hun er gift og har tre barn; Matt (født 1974), Tessa (født 1977) og Susannah (født 1979).
