George Harvey Strait (født 18. mai 1952 i Poteet, Texas, USA) er en amerikansk countryartist som har blitt populær for sin western swing, bar ballader og honky-tonk musikk. Strait går også under tilnavnene «King George» og «King of Country». Mange kritikere[1] hevder også at han er «en levende legende».

George Strait ble født i Poteet, Texas, den 8. mars i 1952. Faren var lærer og farmer. Mora forlot familien mens barna ennå var små. Hun tok med seg datteren, men lot sønnen bli igjen hos faren. George fullførte high school på slutten av 1960-tallet og begynte på college, men sluttet og stakk av med sin high school kjæreste, Norma. I 1971 ble han innrullet i det militære og et par år senere ble han stasjonert på Hawaii der han spilte i countrymusikk gruppa Rambling Country, som var sponset av hæren. Strait forlot hæren i 1975 og returnerte til Texas for å studere landbruk ved Texas State University i San Marcos. På denne tiden dannet han også sitt eget countryband, kalt Ace in the Hole.
Ace in the Hole gjorde noen få album for plateselskapet D Records mot slutten av 1970-tallet, et lite uavhengig selskap i Dallas. Det ble imidlertid ingen suksess. I 1979 møtte Strait bareieren Erv Woolsey, som tidligere hadde jobbet for MCA Records. De ble venner og Woolsey inviterte flere ledere fra MCA for å høre på Strait, noe som resulterte i en platekontrakt med MCA i 1980.
Straits første singelplate, Unwound, kom på markedet på vårparten i 1981 og klatret inn på Topp-10 listen. Oppfølgeren, Down and Out, nådde 16. plass på listen, men If You're Thinking You Want a Stranger (There's One Coming Home) nådde 3. plass tidlig i 1982. Litt senere samme året nådde Fool Hearted Memory 1. plass på listen, og senere fikk Strait 17 låter til inn på 1. plass på listen i løpet av 1980-tallet. Suksessen hans har også fortsatt like inn på 2000-tallet.
