Georg von Ehingen (1428-1508) served in the retinues of various European princes, finally being knighted by Duke Albert VI of Austria in 1452. In 1454-56 he made a pilgrimage to the Holy Land. In 1458-59, after scouring for work throughout Europe, von Ehingen entered the service of Afonso V of Portugal and was sent in command of a reinforcement army to Ceuta. He later entered the service of Henry IV of Castile. Von Ehingen's memoirs, Itinerarium, were written around 1470. They were first published in Augsburg in 1600. However, a manuscript copy (dated c.1550) in the Württembergische Landesbibliothek in Stuttgart has full-color hand-painted portraits that served as the basis of the 1600 woodcuts, that were probably done earlier by (or on the instructions of) Georg von Ehingen himself, and thus are probably a reasonably accurate likeness of the king.
