Digitalt bibliotek er et bibliotek hvor samlingen er lagret i digitalt format (i motsetning til print, mikroform eller andre media) og tilgjengelig via computer ^[1]. Det digitale innholdet kan lagres lokalt eller gjøres tilgjengelig via internett.

Første bruk av termen digital library på trykk kan ha vært i en 1988 rapport til Corporation for National Research Initiatives^[2] Termen digital libraries var først popularisert av NSF/DARPA/NASA Digital Libraries Initiative in 1994^[3]. De eldre navnene electronic library eller virtual library er også brukt, men electronic library refererer i dag mer til portaler, ofte opprettet av offentlige institusjoner, som for Florida Electronic Library.
